The Lightbox...Attention-Getter
Extraordinaire!
by Rick Farrell

In early 2004, when the Gloria Vanderbilt New York
Showroom wanted to create an attention-getting welcome for customers, ExpoTrans
developed a bright LED lightbox display to greet them as they walked in
the door. The 16-section illuminated display system blinks from white to
red light, and back to white light, in bursts from one to two seconds.
The system uses a new LED technology that provides bright, even illumination
with a life-expectancy of seven years. The LED display adds to the elegant
architecture of the Vanderbilt store design and also serves as a source
of advertising to build Gloria Vanderbilt brand recognition.
Visual display can be the first component of a building, exhibit or retail
establishment that meets the eye of the customer and a critical tool
in successful marketing.
In a highly impulse-oriented business such as retail, good visual merchandising
can be the difference between success and failure. The primary goal of visual
merchandising is to communicate with the target audience in a conspicuous and
understandable way while remaining attractive and pleasing to the eye. Illuminated
displays are one of the best ways to accomplish this goal.
Exciting developments in technology and manufacturing today are allowing designers
and customers more flexibility in developing visual display products. Newer
materials and lighting technologies are allowing thinner lightboxes with different
shapes,
other than the traditional squares and rectangles. Because of the flexible
new materials, lightboxes today can be circular and multi-dimensional.
Lightboxes contribute to the architectural design of buildings and exhibits
because of their beauty and brilliance, and are extremely effective in large
public places,
such as shopping malls, museums and airports, and at retail locations for POP
advertising.
In early 2003, ExpoTrans installed a hanging lightbox
at the South Coast Plaza A/X Armani Exchange in Costa Mesa, CA. The striking
display consisted of a double-sided lightbox suspended by thin cables to
project the illusion of the lightbox floating in the window. The side of
the visual display facing outside the store was illuminated with a Duratrans
image, and the other was a non-illuminated poster frame with a front-lit
graphic image. The cable used was thin, durable 1/8 suspension cable, and
the all-welded aluminum lightbox frame was powder-coated in the color ‘Stardust'
for extra luster.
In July 2003, ExpoTrams sister company, IPG Imaging Professionals, produced
mobiles for 63 Apple Computer store window displays featuring 69 double-sided
album covers.
The album covers included The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin
and many other famous bands and artists. The brilliant, eye-catching mobiles
were printed on Sintra®, from Alcan Composites, St. Louis, MO, a durable
PVC rigid substrate, using the Vutek printer. When Vutek is teamed with IPG's
Zund digital cutter, we are able to print on and contour cut any shape from almost
any substrate. The benefits of our digital cutting process are that both rigid
and roll media can be used, all quantities of cutouts can be produced, an endless
array of substrates can be used and materials up to 84" wide by virtually
any length can be cut with unmatched speed and precision. Digital die cut prints
can be used for trade show graphics, retail signage, POP displays, floor graphics,
etc. eb

ExpoTrans manufactures a 2-3/4" deep
outdoor backlit lightbox, which provides powerful performance,
advanced illumination, extra security and ease of use,
while also offering space-saving capabilities because
of the narrow profile. The thin profile outdoor lightbox
has a hinged door configuration with two locks, and is
designed for use in high risk and high traffic environments
where extra security is important. The 2-3/4" lightbox
is ideal for use in shopping malls, museums and other
indoor and outdoor venues.
ExpoTrans has developed a thin two-inch lightbox made
of all-welded aluminum that uses both edge-lit and backlit
lighting for maximum brilliance and balanced lighting
distribution. The thin depth is made possible by smaller
fluorescent tubes, making the lightbox very affordable,
and the smaller lamps are widely accessible. ExpoTrans'
thin profile backlit display combines styling aesthetics
with functionality, making it ideal for use in exhibits,
retail stores, and other high traffic locations.
ExpoTrans' curved lightbox feExpoTrans' curved
lightbox features a rounded face for a more panoramic perspective.
The curved lightbox combines a horizontal or vertical profile with
an advanced built-in reflector design that delivers powerful, even
illumination, and eliminates banding
from hot spots and shadows. The all welded aluminum frame requires
no special tools to open and the hinged door access allows easy graphic
changes and lamp replacement. Curved lightboxes are perfect for long
hallways, exhibits, department stores, and other high-traffic interior
locations.
