Historic House Goes High Tech by George
Erickson
President
National Systems, Inc.
Ipswich, MA
Ipswich Massachusetts is one of the oldest towns in
the U.S., settled in 1633. It was here, in 1687, the
Reverend John Wise denounced taxation without representation,
encouraging the town's citizens to rise up. Ipswich hence
was dubbed The Birthplace of American Independence.
The town has more than 100 historic houses built before 1880. The Whipple House,
c. 1655, and the Heard House, c. 1800, are two houses open to the public during
the summer months.
The curator of the Whipple House provides guided tours and came to National Systems
with a problem: despite the hours of operation clearly posted on a card by the
front door, people would still ring the doorbell and expect someone to respond.
It was agreed that a message announcement might be an additional means of communicating
the hours of the tours.
National Systems installed a model MR 121 Talk-N-Tell™ digital message
repeater to announce to the visitor the features of the house and tour hours
whenever the doorbell button is pressed. The loudspeaker is located close to
the button so the announcement can easily be heard without disturbing the neighbors.
All Talk-N-Tell digital message repeaters are user-recordable.
This allows the curator to change the message whenever
there is a need for a new announcement. Another feature
of the MR 121 is that, when finished recording, the microphone
is unplugged from the unit and stored away. This prevents
tampering with the
recorded message.A total of three messages can be stored with a total message
length of up to six minutes. The unit uses no magnetic
tape or mechanical motion, resulting in high reliability.
On your next summer visit to New England, stop in Ipswich and visit the antique
shops, have some Ipswich fried clams and by all means visit the historic house
that talks! eb
